Chapter 11

Shit. Shit. Shit. Bei had forgotten about the Munician's stink. Those damn pheromones had once made him and his men bow and scrape. Swinging the rifle onto his back, he grabbed a TorpSK7 in each hand. A quick sweep of his thumb dialed down the setting to stun.

No wonder the enemy hadn't run.

The Scraptors and Municians had found a new definition of FUBAR.

Iggy chomped on Bei's leg. Claws tore through the thin layer of NDA making up his uniform. Fangs dented his calf. Blood dripped from her muzzle as the serrated blades on his shins tore open her mouth.

"Sorry feather-head." He fired two quick bursts into her hide to render her unconscious.

Her canine body jerked once. Twice. Then she collapsed on his boot.

"Alpha force." Bei raised his Torp and aimed down the cylindrical barrel. "Neutralize the Alliance crew to stop them from hurting each other. Stun at medium."

"Copy that, Admiral," his men chorused. They shifted from rifles to handguns.

His infrared tagged the biologics yellow. With a thought, he fired every time his weapon locked onto a target. Alliance members fell in the blowing dust. He needed to switch off the fans moving around the manipulative stink.

Two Scraptors lumbered toward Richmond's position.

Behind her, Mechanic Smith fired at her back.

Richmond took out one Scraptor, then turned back to Smith.

Two Plenipotens drew their staffs and swung for the mechanic's bald head.

Richmond took them out.

Smith discharged his weapon, point blank in her face.

Shit. Shit. Bei checked Richmond's life signs.

Critical failures in her sight, olfactory, and respiratory systems. Her cerebral interface pulled energy from her defenses to maintain basic functions. Her avatar wavered in the WA. Well, this sucks.

Bei aimed for the mechanic's back. "Beta group, take out the Scraptors. Zeta group, with me. Let's clear the air."

The mechanic dropped to the ground before the energy burst hit him.

Richmond disarmed Smith with a few well placed punches, using the sensory details provided by her fellow Syn-En to formulate her attack. Holding Smith at arm's length she drew her Torp.

A projectile drilled through the bullet-shaped helmet of the Scraptor poised to sever her head from her body. The enemy's carapace flashed white.

"Bomb!" Bei shouted the warning as he fired, stunning the Alliance soldiers nearby in an effort to spare them the brunt of the blast.

Richmond tackled Smith. Super-heated air and shrapnel ripped through the fog of dust and pheromones. The scent of burning flesh hung heavy on the wind.

Bei plowed through the skirmishing Alliance. Richmond was one of his wife's favorites. The teenage cyborg couldn't be off-line. She was too young to ride the chariot. He queried cyberspace. Nothing. Shunting extra power to his limbs, he used a fallen Scraptor torso as a springboard and leapt over two wrestling Plenipotens. His boots plowed deep into the sand as the diagnostic beam shot out of his wrist.

The blast had burned away Richmond's hair. Her charred NDA bubbled in places and revealed her shiny skull underneath. Optics melted in their sockets. Pieces of red Scraptor armor stuck out of her head.
